Cookie Policy

A complete list of every cookie and local storage entry set by Advertiseengland.com — what each one does, who places it, and how long it lasts.

Effective: 1 January 2026 Last updated: 24 May 2026 Version 1.0

1. What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They allow the site to remember information about your visit — such as your login session or preferred language — so you don't have to re-enter it each time.

This policy covers both traditional browser cookies (set via document.cookie) and similar technologies including localStorage and sessionStorage, which store data in your browser without expiry dates unless cleared manually.

Cookies are categorised as either session cookies (deleted when you close your browser) or persistent cookies (remain until they expire or you delete them).

Necessary

Always active. The site cannot function without these.

Analytics

Require your consent. Help us understand usage.

Marketing

Require your consent. Enable relevant adverts.

2. Necessary cookies

These cookies are essential for the website to function and cannot be switched off. They are set in response to actions you take — such as logging in, filling in a form, or setting your privacy preferences. You can configure your browser to block them, but parts of the site will not work.

Name Provider Purpose Type Duration
ae_cookie_consent Advertise England Stores your cookie consent preferences (which categories you accepted or rejected) so the banner does not reappear on every page. localStorage Persistent
ae_session Advertise England Maintains your login session while you are signed in to your listing dashboard. Deleted when you sign out or close the browser. HTTP Cookie Session
ae_csrf Advertise England Cross-Site Request Forgery token. Protects form submissions from being forged by malicious third-party sites. HTTP Cookie Session
__stripe_sid Stripe Inc. Required by Stripe to process payments securely. Identifies your browsing session during the payment flow. HTTP Cookie Session
__stripe_mid Stripe Inc. Required by Stripe for fraud detection and payment security. Persistent identifier to distinguish returning customers. HTTP Cookie 1 year
cf_clearance Cloudflare Set by our CDN (Cloudflare) to mark that you have passed a security challenge. Prevents repeated challenges on the same browser. HTTP Cookie 1 year

3. Analytics cookies

These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the directory. All data is aggregated and anonymised — we cannot identify individual visitors from this data.

These cookies are only set if you accept analytics cookies in our consent banner. If you decline, these cookies will not be placed and Google Analytics will be disabled for your session.

Name Provider Purpose Type Duration
_ga Google Analytics Registers a unique ID to generate statistics on how the visitor uses the website. IP address is anonymised (last octet removed) before transmission to Google. HTTP Cookie 2 years
_gid Google Analytics Registers a unique ID used to generate statistical data on how the visitor uses the website. Expires after one day. HTTP Cookie 24 hours
_gat_gtag_* Google Analytics Used to throttle request rate — limits data collection on high-traffic sites. HTTP Cookie 1 minute

Google's data processing terms are available at policies.google.com/privacy. Google acts as a data processor under our instructions when providing Analytics.

4. Marketing cookies

Marketing cookies are used to deliver advertisements that are relevant to you and your interests. They may be set by us or by third-party advertising partners whose content we display.

These cookies are only set if you accept marketing cookies in our consent banner. If you decline, you will still see adverts, but they will not be personalised.

Name Provider Purpose Type Duration
_fbp Meta (Facebook) Used by Meta to deliver, measure, and improve the relevance of adverts. Enables remarketing to previous visitors. HTTP Cookie 3 months
_gcl_au Google Ads Used by Google AdSense to experiment with advertisement efficiency across websites using their services. HTTP Cookie 3 months

If we add additional advertising partners in future, this table will be updated and you will be notified via the site notice described in section 8.

5. Local storage

In addition to traditional cookies, we use your browser's localStorage to store small pieces of data that improve your experience. Unlike cookies, localStorage entries are not sent to our servers — they exist only on your device.

You can clear all localStorage entries at any time via your browser's developer tools (F12 → Application → Storage → Local Storage).

Key Purpose Data stored Duration
ae_cookie_consent Stores your cookie banner choices so you are not asked again. JSON: categories accepted/declined + ISO timestamp of consent Persistent until cleared
aeWeatherTown Remembers the town you manually selected in the weather widget so we don't re-run geolocation on every page load. JSON: town name, latitude, longitude, country Persistent until you reset it
aeLocation Caches the approximate location returned by IP geolocation (used when no manual town is set) to avoid repeated API calls. JSON: approximate latitude, longitude, city (from IP geolocation API) 7 days, then refreshed

No personal data from localStorage is ever transmitted to our servers. The IP geolocation used to populate aeLocation is performed client-side by the open-source service geojs.io and is not linked to your account.

6. Third-party services

The following third-party services may set their own cookies or access localStorage independently of our consent mechanism. We recommend reviewing their privacy policies for full details.
